Detection and characterization of volcanic ashes

The detection and characterization of volcanic ashes is far to be completely understood.

As well as for hydrometeors the basic functioning principle of PLUDIX can help in ashes detection and characterization. Terminal velocities and particle size distribution should be clearly investigated by the instrument.  

Measuring Campaign

In order to investigate whether the instrument is able to detect falling volcanic ashes, a short measuring campaign has been arranged together with the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV). From december 15 to december 17 a PLUDIX instrument was tested during the Etna Volcano eruption.
